The Sustainability Fundamentals

The World's First Online Course in Sustainable Apparel

Goals & Expectations

What will I learn and when can I take the course?

Preparing for a sustainable transition requires leadership, inspiration and specialised knowledge. Effective tools are needed to roll out carefully planned sustainability strategies that address each aspect of the value chain. The Sustainability Fundamentals course is a comprehensive online training tool that provides in-depth foundational knowledge about the core issues and challenges of sustainable apparel. Participants complete the course with an energised, creative focus, and a critical awareness that enables them to drive the sustainable transformation of their business forward. In 2017, the course is offered at three different times, with start dates on 6th February (Term 1), 3rd April (Term 2) and 15th September (Term 3).

Who should take this course?

The Sustainabilty Fundamentals course was created with a carefully selected team of experts and designed for textile and apparel professionals, retailers and brands working within fashion, luxury, sport, outdoor and footwear. The foundational, inspiring content also serves to educate those outside the industry who are interested in sustainability and its pivital role in fashion and apparel. All functions within a company are encouraged to participate, from sourcing, design, and production, to marketing, sales, and management. The greater the mix of participants and perspectives, the greater the impact of the course.

How is the course organised?

The Sustainability Fundamentals course provides the knowledge and tools you need to address your sustainability challenges. A largely self-driven course with built in flexibility and optional group work, our course format is thoughtfully designed for busy professionals requiring relevant content and efficient, action-driven learning. This course is offered three different times in 2017, so you can choose the period that best suits your needs, and it requires a minimum time committment of 10 hours over an 11- week period. However, all participants are encouraged to take advantage of the deep wells of information, engage in group discussions parallel to online study, and invest time in the expert video interviews and related assignments.

Course Structure

Optimal & Effective Learning

In order to provide the flexibility companies need, this course is divided into a Core Curriculum and an Extended Curriculum that is optional.

Assignments in the Core Curriculum are designed to be completed within 10 hours. This means that each module takes an average of 2 hours to complete and learners can complete the course at their own pace within the allocated course time frame. The course includes a mix of online lessons and practical assignments. Learners are required to complete the Core Curriculum if they are to receive a Certificate of Completion.

The Extended Curriculum includes additional lessons and takes between 1 and 10 additional hours to complete. Because the Extended Curriculum is not mandatory, learners with more time and interest can choose how much time to spend on these additional components. The Extended Curriculum is not required for receiving a Certificate of Completion.

We currently offer the ‘open group’ Sustainability Fundamentals course three times a year. In 2017, the open course starts on the 6th February, the 3rd of April and the 15th September. We also run ‘closed group’ courses at alternative times to meet the specific needs of brands and retailers. Please contact us for more information about the next available course or to find out how we can tailor the course to your specific requirements.

We are currently using the Docebo Learning Management System for our courses. Please contact us to learn about Docebo’s technical requirements or to ensure a smooth interface with your computer system.

This course is currently designed for computers and tablets, and both Mac and PC. In the future, participants will also be able to access the course on mobile phones. If your company has a specific requirement relating to mobile access, please contact us for more information.

The course assignments require access to Microsoft word. We ask participants to take pictures of their clothing during some assignments, so it is helpful to have a digital camera. Mobile phone cameras are more than sufficient.

Participants who do not complete all the modules by the end of the allocated course period will not receive an SFA Certification of Completion. If you or your company require extra flexibility, please speak with us in advance so that we can set up a beneficial solution.

Live workshops, cross-departmental discussions, and inspirational lectures in conjunction with online training improve the effectiveness and impact of the training. We encourage this and can support you in designing an internal programme that achieves this and links to your long-term sustainability strategy, education and training goals.

We offer a variety of tailoring options to enhance the learning experience. Please contact us to discuss these options and we will ensure that the course is optimally tailored to match your specific needs.

Participants are able to download module summaries, assignments and links during their course period. However, if students need continued access to the course lessons, assignments and optional material after they’ve completed the course, we recommend our extended course access service, which is offered for a nominal yearly subscription fee. Please contact us for more information.

Yes. The course is designed and structured for apparel professionals, but those entering the course with a different background and perspective are welcome on the course. In instances where assignments relate to studying the practices of brands or retailers, you may choose a company to research online and easily create a case out of their reported experience.
